I’m Michael Campling, and I live and write on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, where the weather can change in minutes, the lanes are rarely straight and everybody seems to know something about everybody else.
I’m exploring this fascinating and often untamed place, and I’d love you to come with me.
Here you’ll find stories about Dartmoor and rural Devon, curious pieces of local history, forgotten places, village life, walks, wildlife, odd characters, traditional crafts, folklore and legends, strange tales and more.
I’m also the author of The Devonshire Mysteries, a series of cosy crime novels featuring Dan Corrigan, an unlikely amateur sleuth who finds himself investigating murder in rural Devon, and I write the connected series, The Devonshire Crime Thrillers set in the 90’s and starring rookie detective DC Spiller.
One way or another, the real Devon often finds its way into my fiction. Sometimes it’s a landscape. Sometimes it’s a piece of history. Sometimes it’s a current event that makes me think, I could turn that into a book.
Postcards is where I explore the real world behind the stories.
Some weeks it’ll be a walk. Some weeks it’ll be a forgotten Devon story. Sometimes it’ll be something I’ve noticed while going about ordinary village life.
